FRAUD FROM 2014 HOME DEPOT DATA BREACH CONFIRMED ON ASCU VISA DEBIT CARDSIn October of 2014, Home Depot Stores announced that it experienced unauthorized access to its data payment systems. The unauthorized access took place between April 30, 2014, and August 24, 2014.
American Southwest Credit Union published its response to the breach to our membership in our October 2014 newsletter and posted the announcement on our website. ASCU’s position was to not re-issue the affected cards that were included in Home Depot’s alert at that time; rather, we recommended that you monitor your account regularly and inform the Credit Union immediately of any unusual activity. Now, because of recent irregular activity that has been reported on some of the affected cards, it has become necessary that we immediately block and replace the affected pool of cards.
If your card has been identified within the breach, you will be receiving a letter from ASCU within the next few days with instructions. It is important to note that “compromised” simply means that typically secure information has been exposed to an unauthorized person(s). This does not mean that fraud has taken place on your account at this time. However, American Southwest Credit Union is taking this proactive approach of replacing our affected members with a new Visa debit card in order to avoid any fraudulent activity that may occur in the future because of this breach. ASCU will begin re-issuing cards to those members (at no cost to you) over the next few days. Unfortunately, because of confirmed fraudulent activity, we cannot allow your current card to remain open. Because of the high demand of replacement cards related to this breach, please allow 14-21 days for your new card to arrive.
Please be assured that you will not be held liable for any unauthorized transactions that may occur due to the breach. ASCU is asking all Visa debit cardholders to diligently monitor their account activity and contact our offices immediately if any unusual activity is detected. If you have already cancelled your card and received your replacement, please disregard this notice. We apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused you. ASCU is committed to protecting our members’ information.
